Glassware and Pale Ales :

Whilst darker ales (as Porter) had been drunk in England from about 1700,

the 18th century also saw the development of the lighter beers.

This introduction included an extensively hopped lighter beer known as "India Pale Ale".

This ale was made in England, then (as it traveled well) shipped to India,

and eventually adopted "India" into its name.

But likely of greater significance to both ale and glass lovers,

it is said that the change from pewter tankards to elegant clear glassware

actually caused beer drinkers to prefer the lighter ales.
